By Tiffany Nelson
Spoiler alert: It’s not the kitchen, the primary bedroom, or even the walk-in closet.
I’ve been designing homes and workspaces for over a decade, and through all the projects, floor plans, color swatches, and client consultations, I’ve discovered something a little unexpected: my own favorite space in a home isn’t what most people would guess.
Yes, I’ve created some truly show-stopping kitchens, luxurious spa-style bathrooms, serene bedrooms, and even envy-worthy home offices. But the one room that truly captures my heart – the one I return to again and again, both professionally and personally – is far more unassuming.
Drumroll, please...
My Favorite Room? The Breakfast Nook.

That’s right. The humble, cozy breakfast nook.
Most people are surprised when I tell them. But once I explain why, I often see the lightbulb go off in their minds too. The breakfast nook is more than just a little table in a corner. It’s the heart of the home. It’s comfort. It’s connection. It’s where real life happens.
Let’s take a closer look at why I love breakfast nooks so much, how I created my own, and how you can design a cozy, inviting nook that works for your lifestyle and home layout.
Why the Breakfast Nook?
1. It’s the Coziest Space in the House
Unlike formal dining rooms that can feel stiff or underutilized, the breakfast nook is inviting and approachable. It’s a natural gathering place that encourages relaxed conversation and spontaneous moments.
In many homes, it’s the first place the family gathers in the morning and the last place you end up chatting over tea at night. Whether you’re flipping through a magazine, helping your kids with homework, or catching up with your partner over coffee, the nook is where life feels most lived-in.

2. It’s Intimate and Multifunctional
The smaller scale of a breakfast nook creates a sense of closeness. You sit a little nearer, talk a little longer, and feel a little more grounded.
From a design perspective, it’s also a surprisingly versatile space. It can function as:
A cozy reading corner
A homework hub
A spot for casual dining
A remote work station
A coffee catch-up corner
You’d be amazed how a well-designed breakfast nook can do so much with so little square footage.
How I Created My Own Breakfast Nook
Let me take you behind the scenes of how I transformed a less-than-useful space in my own home into my favorite room.
My kitchen had this awkward cabinet that jutted out oddly from the wall – not enough to be a true pantry, but too bulky to ignore. I love storage, don’t get me wrong, but this just didn’t make sense. So, I took a chance.

Here's what I did:
Removed the cabinet entirely to open up the wall.
Installed a restaurant-style metal pole to anchor the table base.
Topped it off with a Carrara marble tabletop for a clean, timeless look.
Custom-built two bench seats in white faux leather (easy to clean, kid- and guest-friendly).
Tossed in a few colorful pillows, layered soft textures, and added a pendant light above.

And just like that, I had created a breakfast nook that was equal parts stylish and soul-soothing.
Now, when friends, family, or clients visit, guess where we always end up chatting? That’s right—right there in the nook. Every single time.

How to Design Your Own Dream Nook
Ready to fall in love with your own breakfast nook? You don’t have to be a professional designer to create something special. Here’s how to get started.
1. Choose the Right Spot
The first step is finding the perfect place to build your nook. Some ideal locations include:
A kitchen corner (especially good for L-shaped benches)
A bay window for natural light and architectural charm
A wall separating two rooms (create spatial definition with high bench backs)
An unused corner of a larger room—sometimes underutilized areas are the most magical when reimagined!
You don’t need a large footprint. Even a 5' x 5' area can be transformed into a warm and functional nook.
2. Plan Your Layout
There’s no one-size-fits-all for nooks. Choose a layout that works for your home, your family, and your style. Here are some popular configurations:
Straight bench + chairs
Two parallel benches
L-shaped bench + chairs
U-shaped benches with a round table (great for bigger families or dinner parties)
Always leave at least 12 inches of legroom between the seat and the table. A table height of 30 inches paired with a seat height of 18 inches works well for most people.

3. Add Storage (Optional, But Recommended!)
Breakfast nooks can be sneaky storage solutions. Consider:
Bench seating with lift-up lids
Front-facing cubbies or drawers
Floating shelves above or nearby for cookbooks or coffee mugs
Custom built-in breakfast nook drawer with soft gray cushion, decorative French pillows, and smart storage solution

Especially in smaller homes or urban spaces, every inch counts—and your breakfast nook can help maximize both form and function.
Make It Yours: Decorating the Nook
Here’s the fun part—styling your space!
Pro Tips for Styling Your Nook:
Use light or neutral colors on the main pieces and add color through textiles.
Mix and match: Pair a modern table with vintage chairs or go for rustic benches with sleek upholstery.
Add plush pillows and seat cushions for comfort and personality. Don’t be afraid to go bold with patterns or textures.
Lighting matters! A well-placed pendant or chandelier can turn your nook into a showstopper. Consider warm tones like brass or matte black.
Finish with personal touches: a vase of fresh flowers, framed family photos, a stack of books—whatever makes it feel like you.
Budget Tip: Don’t break the bank! Stores like IKEA, HomeGoods, Wayfair, or TJ Maxx are amazing for affordable finds that look designer-grade.
Breakfast Nook Design Mistakes to Avoid
Even simple projects can go off track. Here are some common pitfalls—and how to avoid them:
Cramped layouts: Don’t skimp on spacing. Allow enough elbow room and clearance to slide in and out comfortably.
Uncomfortable seating: Opt for bench depths between 18"–28" depending on whether you want casual or lounge-style comfort.
Mismatched heights: Ensure your table and seating are proportionate.
Forgetting lighting: Overhead light gives the nook a destination feel. Don't rely solely on ambient kitchen lighting.

Real-Life Nook Inspiration
Some of my favorite projects (and Pinterest-worthy setups) include:
A farmhouse-style nook with reclaimed wood benches, plaid cushions, and mason jar lighting.
A mid-century modern nook with angular lines, walnut finishes, and graphic pillows.
A minimalist nook with all-white seating, Scandinavian tableware, and a single green plant.
The style possibilities are endless—but the feeling they create is universal: homey, warm, and welcoming.
Why I Think Everyone Needs a Breakfast Nook
A breakfast nook isn’t just a place to eat. It’s a lifestyle space. It’s where:
You decompress from the day.
Your kids color while you prep dinner.
You laugh with your best friend over wine.
You take that first sip of morning coffee in silence.
It’s those small, soulful moments that define the true luxury of a well-designed home.
As a designer, I’ve seen firsthand how clients light up when they see their completed nooks. Often, it becomes the most loved and lived-in space of the entire home—just like mine.
